A Weekend Away: Moosehorn Lake...

Luck would have it that I would be called off from my usual job on Friday, which meant an extra day of camping.  We had planned a trip to Moosehorn Lake in the High Uintah's months ago, but only for one night.  Giddy with excitement we threw our stuff into our 1970 Rancho El Rae Camper (It's vintage and oh... so... HOT!), grabbed our dog Paisley, and headed up hoping to find a spot near our reserved spot on Saturday.  Luck found us once again, and we were able to switch our reservation to the spot next door and stay an extra night without moving.  Hooray!

Nature made rest stop!
Paisley came along for the fun, she loved camping and especially enjoyed hiking.
Camping is what my boys live for, they LOVE it!  Wilderness, fishing, hiking, campfires, yummy dinners cooked over a fire, and places for all their endless energy to go!  Camping is something I wish I had more of when I was a kid, but I think I am getting a second chance at that - kind of making up for lost camping time!  The boys spent a great deal of time making hiking sticks with their dad, fishing and exploring, and playing with sling-shots (warning - my little Ian is DANGEROUS).

Will was King of the World on this not-so-little hike!
Haden Peak and endless numbers of trees...
View of the lakes to the South - absolutely beautiful!
The hubby likes nothing better than to scare me and dangle his feet off a 1,200-foot cliff!
Altitude sickness setting in at 11,900 feet - time to go down...

This trip ended up being all about hiking.  We hiked to the top of Bald Mountain.  It is listed as a difficult hike, but a crazy man at the trailhead assured us that my little farmhands could make it, "easy".  It wasn't super easy, but they made it!  4 miles and 2,400 feet in elevation change makes one tired dog and two really exhausted boys.  The view from the top made it all worth it.  I was so proud of those two boys.  They are troopers, they didn't really want to give up until a bit of altitude sickness started to hit around 11,900 feet.  They forged to the top anyway, with a little assurance and a bit of a bribe involving chocolate!

Some very crafty person made a rock fort about 500 feet below the summit, the boys loved it!
We had great fresh food picked right from the farm, cooked over campfires.  Corn from a neighboring farm cooked in hot coals.  We did almost all vegetarian/vegan meals, and we didn't miss the meat at all. (Add enough summer squash and fresh dug potatoes, with a bit of sea salt, and really... who needs meat?!?)  Hobo dinners made from potatoes, summer squash, onions, and carrots was my favorite thing.  I would drive back right now just to have it again!!!

There really is nothing better than spending time as a family exploring the incredible wilderness that surrounds us.  The views and foliage was amazing.  The wildflowers were in full bloom and absolutely gorgeous.  I have never stood in a field of wildflowers until this weekend, and it is breathtaking.  Get outside!  Take your kids and make an incredible memory!  There is no better time and no excuse big enough!  Now get out there, enjoy your family, make every moment count, and have fun!!!
